‘Worst dive in Champions League history’ as player goes flying miles from anyone

A Union Berlin player has been shamed around Europe for "the worst dive in Champions League history".

Lucas Tousart, 31, was competing in a must win clash against Braga. The Bundesliga minnows needed a victory over the Portuguese side, to ensure they had a tiny chance of either reaching the Round of 16 or ensuring they finish third in the group and drop down into the Europa League.

With their final group match being an ominous home clash against Real Madrid, a win was absolutely needed. With the score at 1-1, Tousart had an opportunity on the right hand side of the penalty area, but instead of taking on a player and looking to cross, he cynically tried to win a penalty.

When freed down the right hand side, Tousart poked the ball past Braga defender Jose Fonte. When he realised his heavy first touch was taking him off the pitch, the Frenchman threw himself into the air, hoping he could win a penalty.

Unfortunately for him, he did not realise is that his bearings were completely wrong. He was around three feet away from Fonte, who used his experience and decided not to dive in to the challenge.

The result was the Union Berlin star was guilty of one of the most shameless dives you will see this season. Needless to say, referee Clement Turpin was not having any of it.

Instead of pointing to the spot, the French official gave the former Hertha Berlin and Lyon midfielder a yellow card for simulation. The match went on to end in a 1-1 draw, ending Berlin's chances of reaching the knockout stages of the last 16.

However, if Napoli overcome Braga in Naples and they manage to secure a miraculous victory over an already qualified Real Madrid at home, Berlin will finish third and drop into the Europa League Round of 32 stages.

After losing their first three matches, a creditable 1-1 draw away to Napoli and Braga has left them with the slimmest of hopes of remaining in European competition beyond the group stages.
