The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan was an Everton fan and took savage swipe at Liverpool

The late Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan was a huge Everton fan and made his colours known as he once took a hilariously savage swipe at rivals Liverpool.

It was announced on Thursday that MacGowan passed away aged 65 following a long battle with various health issues that had left him needing a wheelchair and unable to walk since 2015 after he fell and broke his pelvis.

The Fairytale of New York singer was a massive football fan with one of The Pogues' most famous covers ‘Dirty Old Town’ regularly sung on football terraces up and down the country. But despite the song originally being about Salford, it was a Merseyside club that MacGowan was head over heels for.

MacGowan was once asked when he visited Liverpool what his favourite thing about the place was, before comically replying: “Everton”. The singer was then asked what his favourite memory of Liverpool was, replying with an even better answer: “Michael Thomas, Anfield, 1989.”

Thomas’ moment came for Arsenal as he scored the Gunners’ second goal in a 2-0 win at Anfield on the final day of the 1988/89 season – seeing Arsenal crowned First Division champions at the expense of Liverpool, who were pipped to the title on goals scored following Thomas’ goal in the final seconds of the game which ended the North London clubs’ 18 year wait for a title.

As celebrated of a moment as it was for Arsenal fans, the goal and Thomas also are also fondly remembered by Everton who saw their arch-rivals lose out of the league title in the final seconds of the season against the team who would beat them to it.

While etched into history for his goal for Arsenal on that day, just two years later Thomas signed for Liverpool for £1.5million, he played 163 times and won the FA Cup and League Cup during a seven year stay at Anfield.
