Roy Keane adamant he’s not been sent off 13 times – despite being told stats

Manchester United legend Roy Keane insisted "it's not true" after being told he received 13 red cards in his career.

The notorious hardman gained his reputation thanks to his temper, which would often get the better of him on the pitch. And not even he could remember all the times the red mist descended during his playing days.

Discussing sendings off on the Stick to Football podcast, his former United team-mate Gary Neville asked him how many times he was given his marching orders. "Not that many, I think seven or eight," Keane replied.

"That's a lot bro," replied Ian Wright, while Jill Scott argued: "It's got to be more than that." Keane was adamant that wasn't the case, hitting back: "No, it's not."

It was then that Neville, assisted by a producer off-screen, said: "I'm hearing 13." Keane stuck to his guns, responding: "Well you're hearing wrong.

"Absolutely not. It's not 13, that's not true. It's not 13, Christ. Listen if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. It's not 13. I don’t regret any of them. People were annoying me."

After spending a few minutes gathering the info, Neville proceeded to read through all of Keane's red cards. The first was for a stamp on England boss Gareth Southgate in an FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace in 1995.

"He deserved it," Keane hilariously declared. He went on to say he was unlucky to receive two yellow cards in a August 1995 league clash with Blackburn, for which the second booking was for diving.

He had Wright, Scott and Neville in stiches again after admitting his third sending off was for trying to punch a Middlesbrough player.

Keane later spoke about telling referee David Elleray to "book me in the tunnel" and said he thinks his most infamous red, the foul on Erling Haaland's dad Alf-Inge, "wasn't that bad" – blaming Neville for telling the linesman it was only yellow.
