Jamie Carragher makes subtle Todd Boehly dig with Pochettino comparison

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has issued a subtle dig at Chelsea owner Todd Boehly after claiming Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t have the same quality at his disposal as the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. Chelsea were involved in an eight-goal Premier League thriller on Sunday afternoon as they drew 4-4 with Pep Guardiola’s Citizens at Stamford Bridge.
Boehly has spent around £1billion since buying Chelsea at the end of May 2022 and has brought in a whole host of star players. But Carragher insists the current Chelsea manager is lacking in some areas.
“What Pochettino has done in big games is fantastic,” the 45-year-old told Sky Sports. “You can almost see him as a manager going up against [Jurgen] Klopp, [Pep] Guardiola, Mikel Arteta and he hasn’t quite got the tools that they’ve got.
“I know they’ve spent a lot of money – people will say that – but he hasn’t. And when you look at the team on paper and the set-up it’s still short of what the other top teams have got. But what they’ve done in big games is a real feather in the cap.”

Erling Haaland opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first half after sending Blues keeper Robert Sanchez the wrong way from the penalty spot. But the hosts hit back just before the half hour mark as Thiago Silva headed in Conor Gallagher’s corner.
Chelsea then took the lead eight minutes before the interval as Raheem Sterling netted against his former side. But Manuel Akanji levelled with a headed effort in stoppage time at the end of the opening period.

The frenetic action continued in the second half as Haaland struck for the second time in the match two minutes after the break. But Nicolas Jackson found the back of the net for the hosts after 67 minutes as the ball swept from end to end.
Rodri thought he had won the game for the Citizens as his effort from the edge of the box deflected past Sanchez. But former City player Cole Palmer clinched a point for Chelsea after keeping his cool to lash home a penalty in the 95th minute.
And Carragher added: “I just think they’ve done really well in the big games. When you talk about atmospheres at certain stadiums – maybe I’ve commentated here maybe more than other places – but I always feel like it can get going here at Chelsea when they get up a head of steam and put a bit of pressure on. I don’t think City were anywhere near their best and Chelsea I thought were fantastic, but it still finishes 4-4. That still shows the gulf between both teams.”
