Fans hail ‘vintage’ Peter Drury for his Cole Palmer quip after Chelsea equaliser

Football fans hailed "vintage" Peter Drury for his response to Cole Palmer's equaliser for Chelsea against Manchester City

Palmer, 21, rescued a point from the spot in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (November 12) in the final act of a pulsating 4-4 draw. He coolly converted past former City team-mate Ederson.

Having made a £42.5million transfer switch from the Etihad in the summer in pursuit of regular game time, his goal was perfectly summed up by Drury, who quipped: “City’s boy is Chelsea’s man."

It earned him praise from many Sky Sports viewers on social media, with one exclaiming: "Wow that’s vintage Peter Drury there." Another argued: "Yet more god tier commentary from Peter Drury, unmatched."

"Peter Drury is the Shakespeare of football commentary for real," praised a third, while a fourth claimed: "So clear of Martin Tyler. Best thing Sky done."

A fifth added: "This sort of thing is why Peter Drury, currently, is as good as anybody. Proper big game feel and sense of occasion." And a sixth joked: "Peter Drury mate I will cry at your funeral."

Drury's impressive word play didn't stop there either. Summing up the game at the full-time whistle, he said: "It’s over. A treat, a joy, a gem of a game. An extraordinary day. A twisting yarn this way and that.

"A game of protest, of anger, of fury, of pain, of pleasure. There is time for love, for mutual appreciation amidst it all. It has been the most splendid Premier League showcase which has first flicked one way and then the other."

Coming back to Palmer again, he later added: "Chelsea weren’t having it and who, who in the fury of the final frenzied minutes should step up, but a 20-year-old from Wythenshawe on the edge of Manchester.

"Brought up to believe in Manchester City, his big choice to depart them this summer and change his shade of blue and he it was who with the final significant kick, changed the dynamic, the outcome of a quite remarkable game."

Drury will be grateful for the international break having also covered Chelsea's previous manic fixture, their 4-1 win away at Tottenham last week, in which he also hit the nail on the head with just 11 words.
