‘Cocky’ Gary Neville mocked Liverpool icon before Man Utd’s biggest humiliation

Gary Neville had egg on his face when Liverpool smashed Manchester United 7-0 last season after mocking Graeme Souness' prediction for the game.

The Red Devils suffered arguably their biggest humiliation of the Premier League era after shipping seven goals without reply at Anfield back in March. Ahead of the tie, Souness said it had been a while since he'd felt so confident of a Liverpool win against United, prompting snickers from Sky Sports colleagues Neville and Roy Keane.

Later on, Neville labelled Souness "overconfident" and told followers on TikTok that he could sense plenty of anxiety around Anfield, but any angst among the home fans completely dissipated by the hour-mark. Jurgen Klopp's men were just 1-0 up at half time, but turned on the style after the restart, sparking one of the worst capitulations in United history.

Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah all bagged braces and the rout was completed late on by Roberto Firmino. Towards the end, Jamie Carragher, who was on co-commentary with Neville, posted a brutal selfie with the ex-United defender, who had, as you might expect, a face like thunder.

The embarrassment didn't stop there. Neville and Carragher joined Souness and Keane in the studio afterwards, and the Liverpool duo eagerly reminded their United counterparts of their pre-match confidence, prompting a furious reaction from Neville, who accused Carragher and Souness of "gloating like little children".

The barbs came flying in on social media too. One Liverpool fan said of Neville: "He was so cocky expected to just walk into Anfield and beat us! Instead United left with their tails well and truly between their legs after a 7-0 hammering! They aren't very tough!"

Neville's pre-match confidence was understandable. United went into the tie 10 points ahead of Liverpool, who had been struggling for form all season. Erik ten Hag's men had also won eight of their previous 11 league fixtures, including a 2-1 win over Manchester City, and had lifted the Carabao Cup a few weeks before.

Nevertheless, it'll probably be a while before we see Neville quite so assured heading into a Liverpool vs United clash, especially if his old side fail to get out of the funk they've been in this season.
