Bulgarian football coach Ferario Spasov killed in traffic collision

Bulgarian football manager Ferario Spasov is tragically killed in a high-speed traffic collision aged 61 ‘after being his vehicle was hit from behind by a Mercedes travelling at 93MPH’

Bulgarian football coach Ferario Spasov has passed away, aged 61, following a high-speed traffic collision that has left two others injured on Saturday. 

Reports from Bulgaria state that the incident occurred at approximately 17:00 as the Dunav Lom coach was heading home after watching his team play against Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa.

The collision reportedly took place near the city of Veliko Tarnovo on a road between Sofia and Varna. 

It is understood the accident occurred after a Mercedes sports car hit Spasov’s vehicle from behind. 

According to Bulgarian news outlet Tribune, the Mercedes was travelling at approximately 93mph before the incident. Spasov was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred as the Dunav Lom coach was heading home after watching his team play against Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa

Two people, who were in the Mercedes, were also reportedly injured in the accident.  

The football coach enjoyed a managerial career that spanned for 29 years, taking charge of over ten different clubs, including Lovech, CSKA Sofia and Montana. 

He started his coaching career as the manager of Olimpik Galata in 1994, before going on to guide Lovech to back-to-back titles in the Bulgarian top flight in 1998 and 1999. 

He would also win the Bulgarian Cup with Lovech in 2001. 

Spasov would subsequently go on to work with multiple different teams before being appointed Dunav Lom manager in October, while also having previously managed the Bulgarian U17 national side. 

His former club, CSKA Sofia, issued a tribute to the manager on their website

The statement read: ‘It is with great pain and sorrow that we inform you that yesterday the former coach of CSKA Ferario Spasov died in a car accident near Veliko Tarnovo.

‘The management, the players, the coaching staff and all CSKA employees express their sincere condolences to the family, relatives and relatives of Ferario Spasov!’

Prior to going into management, Spasov had played as a midfielder for several clubs, including Osam Lovech and Spartak Pleven, in a playing career that spanned from 1979 to 1994.
