‘Michael Schumacher felt it was a conspiracy to kill him – it was an accident’

Ex-Formula One driver David Coulthard has claimed Michael Schumacher thought he was trying to kill him during a race, but the Brit said it was just an accident.

Coulthard made the claim in an upcoming documentary 'Being Michael Schumacher' – which will be aired by German broadcasters ARD next month. "Michael thought it was some sort of conspiracy to kill him and try and help my teammate Mika," Coulthard said speaking of the incident.

It was 1998, and Schumacher was trying to win his first Drivers World Championship with Ferrari. The German needed to win the Belgian GP in Spa-Francorchamps to keep the pressure on Mika Hakkinen.

However, Schumacher was forced to retire from the race after he collided with Hakkinen's McLaren team-mate, Coulthard. He continued: "But it was simply an accident. It was just one of those things."

The German was furious, and he told reporters in the pit lane: "David is a sensible driver, so I don't understand at all why he acted like this!" In the docu-series, Coulthard can be heard telling reporters: "I can’t understand him (Schumacher).

"He has just accused me again of wanting to kill him. He has to take that back, it can't be true. I hope he has some regret over his comments."

Hakkinen would go onto win in Luxembourg and Japan, wrapping up his maiden Driver's World Championship. The Flying Finn made it back-to-back triumphs in 1999 before Ferrari and Schumacher ushered an era of domination over the sport. And Coulthard believes it was the German's ruthlessness that led to this era of domination.

He said: "Schumacher could be very ruthless, he could be cold, he could be distant. I think that's probably the level you need to be at to be that successful. My understanding of where the limit was perhaps more in line with the rest of the drivers."

Meanwhile, the 54-year-old has been out of the public eye since suffering a life-altering injury while skiing in the French Alps in December 2013. Seven-time F1 champion Schumacher’s family have kept details surrounding his current health private since he came out of a medically induced coma and continued his rehabilitation at home all those years ago.
