Axed Red Bull star demands sit-down with Helmut Marko after brutal dismissal

Pierre Gasly has stated that he would like to sit down and have a chat with Helmut Marko and Red Bull to discuss his premature departure from the team back in 2019. The Frenchman spent just 12 races in his seat before being ousted for Alex Albon.

After a promising first full season in F1 with Toro Rosso in 2018, Gasly was given a somewhat unexpected promotion to the sister team for the 2019 campaign, where he would partner up with notorious team-mate slayer and now three-time world champion Max Verstappen.

Unfortunately for Gasly, the move was nothing short of a disaster as he finished inside the top five on just two occasions and was lapped by his team-mate in Austria. After the Hungarian Grand Prix, he was demoted back to Toro Rosso with Albon taking his place.

This proved to be a turning point for the 27-year-old, who clinched his first-ever F1 podium later that year, before shocking the racing world by winning at Monza the season after. A move to Alpine came along in 2023, where Gasly has once again impressed.

Asked on his recent Beyond the Grid podcast appearance whether or not he and Marko have spoken since his departure, he responded: “No. I hope one day we get the chance to but I know deep inside, they’re smart people.

“They might have their own opinions on certain things but they are clear things which were obvious. It’s the way that it was. It wasn’t really fair but anyway, that’s the way it was. I’ve learned as well that the sport is not always fair.

“I’ve really sort of closed the chapter when I left AlphaTauri and opened a brand new story with Alpine and I think I’ve reached a level of experience and skills and mindfulness right now, which thanks to my previous experiences allow me to be better today than I was yesterday.”

Thankfully for Gasly, his move to Alpine in the winter has allowed him to branch out and rebuild a long-term future outside of the Red Bull family. He has enjoyed an impressive debut season with the French team and sits 16 points clear of highly-rated team-mate Esteban Ocon heading into the final two rounds of the 2023 season.
