Novak Djokovic enjoys singalong with US Open crowd as he steals microphone
Novak Djokovic had some fun with the Arthur Ashe Stadium fans after defeating Taylor Fritz as he led the 23,000-strong crowd in a singalong. While the No 2 seed was being interviewed by Rennae Stubbs, he took the opportunity to steal the microphone and got everyone to sing Fight For Your Right, minutes after it was played by the DJ during the match.
Djokovic put on another clinic on the US Open’s main stadium court on Tuesday as he sent the top-ranked American packing with a 6-1 6-4 6-4 win. While the scoreline was clearly in favour of the second seed, Djokovic still found himself struggling with the hot and humid conditions as temperatures neared 35 degrees.
On-court interviewer Rennae Stubbs picked up on a minor detail that may have helped the Serb try and deal with the heat, as he had gotten a haircut. Asked about his new trim, Djokovic laughed and responded: “Yeah haircut helped a lot obviously. I’m more aerodynamic today on the court getting to the ball faster than I was a few days ago.”
The three-time US Open champion then admitted it was tough to play in the conditions, referencing the Beastie Boys. He continued: “Jokes aside, I’m drenched in sweat and I saw Taylor as well changed shirt a couple of times. Just very humid conditions, difficult to play but for both players it’s the same. That’s why we train, try to get ourselves in the best possible conditions to deliver. Not easy but you gotta fight and as the song went five minutes ago – you gotta fight for your right to party.”
