Wilfried Zaha had a hand in sending Manchester United to the foot of their Champions League group as Galatasaray produced a stirring fightback.

The Crystal Palace legend, who had a forgettable spell at Old Trafford between 2013 and 2015, joined the Turkish giants in the summer. He made his third appearance for his new club, coming off the bench on 66 minutes with Galatasaray trailing 2-0 to Copenhagen.

The home side were given hope when Elias Jelert was sent off in the 73rd minute for two bookable offences before Sacha Boey pulled a goal back. Zaha then played his hand, twisting and turning down the left and sending in an inviting cross which was brilliantly hammered home first time by Tete.

The goal sparked wild scenes at Rams Park in Istanbul and while Galatasaray didn’t go on and find a winner, it at least ensured they wouldn’t end match night one at the foot of Group A. Instead, it is beleaguered United who prop up the table following their chaotic 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich.

After the match, Zaha posted on social media: “Amazing comeback from the team today. We keep pushing forward together!!”

Zaha, 30, who has signed a three-year deal with Galatasaray, was a free agent after the expiry of his Palace contract. He turned down a £200,000-a-week offer to stay at Selhurst Park.

Galatasaray revealed they would pay Zaha a signing fee of 2.35million euros (£2million) and an annual salary of 4.35m euros (£3.75m). The move was announced after Zaha used an Instagram post to bid farewell to Palace, the club he joined when he was 12, describing the club’s shirt as his “second skin”.

Zaha, who scored 90 goals in 458 appearances for Palace, returns to Old Trafford with Galatasaray on October 3 before Bayern visit Istanbul on October 24.
