Paul Scholes believes Manchester United should have bought Harry Kane and Declan Rice in the summer.

United suffered Champions League humiliation on Tuesday night as they crashed out in the group stages. Erik ten Hag's side lost 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich, leaving them bottom of a group that also contained FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.

The Red Devils picked up just four points from their six games, recording one win during that time. After finishing fourth out of four, it means there will be no European football for United after Christmas, with the club having even missed out on the Europa League.

It sums up a dreadful start to the season for the 13-time Premier League champions, who now face the daunting prospect of playing away to Liverpool on Sunday. Defeat at Anfield coupled with other results could see them plunge to eighth in the table.

United's slump has been put down to a number of reasons, including their recruitment. They have spent big on players who are not doing the business, including Antony and Jadon Sancho.

Speaking on TNT Sport, club legend Scholes laid into the club's transfer policy and picked out two stars he believes they should have spent £100million on in the summer. "I think there were probably a couple of big mistakes in the summer," he began.

"I think the recruitment at Manchester United this year in the summer was the easiest it could ever have been. You think the likes of Harry Kane – £100million probably you get him. He'd have come here.

"The other one was Declan Rice – £100m. You're buying proper known quality, the right characters, they know about this club, they know the country, they're quality, quality players. I thought it was so easy."

As it turned out, United missed out on both men, with Kane opting to join Bayern Munich in an £86million deal, and Rice moving to Premier League rivals Arsenal from West Ham for £100m.
