Rooney ‘never had relationship with Vardy’ as he’s quizzed over Wagatha Christie

Birmingham City boss Wayne Rooney has claimed he 'never had a relationship' with Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

The pair, who played together for England, were caught in the crossfire of the Wagatha Christie saga, which saw Rooney's wife, Coleen Rooney publicly out Vardy's wife, Rebekah Vardy, for leaking private stories about her to the press.

A high profiled libel case ensued, with Mrs Vardy rejecting the claims, only for the High Court to rule in Rooney's favour last year. And come Monday, Rooney and Vardy's Championship sides will go up against each other when Birmingham host the Foxes at St Andrew's, re-igniting the drama.

The ex-Manchester United striker was appointed Birmingham boss controversially after the club dismissed John Eustace, despite them being sixth in the table. Since then, they have plummeted to 16th, having won just twice in their last 10 games.

Of course, the meeting of Rooney and Vardy has led to the resurfacing of the Wagatha Christie chatter. However, Rooney was adamant he is only focussed upon the match against Championship leaders Leicester and not the noise surrounding the fixture.

"I think what is important is we don’t get dragged into a sideshow about everything that has happened in the past, which everyone is aware has been dealt with from a legal point of view," Rooney said. "My job is to focus on Birmingham trying to win the game."

Some would think that given Rooney and Vardy played together at international level that they might be on good terms. However, the Birmingham boss also added that while he believes Vardy, who will likely miss the game against the Blues, to be a "fantastic player", he never had "a relationship" with him.

He added of Vardy: "I played with him for England, the same as I played with many players for England.

"He is not someone who I have ever had a relationship with, outside of being away on a training camp or being in games with him. I respect Jamie Vardy a lot – I think he is a fantastic player – he still has a lot to offer Leicester.

"In my opinion, Jamie Vardy is a fantastic player and has been for many years, a great servant for Leicester. Ultimately, the game is about Birmingham going to try and win the game. Anything else, there is nothing really to talk about."
