Man Utd out of Europe – Three things Erik ten Hag got wrong as Bayern secure win

Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League with a whimper against Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 at Old Trafford on a night where they needed three points to have any chance of qualifying for the last-16. And while things didn't go their way elsewhere, they only had themselves to blame, squandering the five shots they were able to take.

Instead, it was the always-threatening Kingsley Coman who grabbed the winner in the 70th minute with a cool finish inside the box. Not qualifying out of their group would have been unheard of in Sir Alex Ferguson's time – and Daily Star Sport takes a look at the tactical mishaps on Erik ten Hag's part that left his side bowing out of the competition prematurely.

Defending out wide

Do you think Man Utd deserved to go through? Let us know in the comments section.

United would have done plenty of work on the training ground on how to stop Bayern's devastating wide players – but it didn't seem to pay off as the Bundesliga champions created chance after chance from wide areas. Noussair Mazraoui and Kingsley Coman in particular caused havoc on the right hand side from the off.

The former was unlucky not to get an assist in the first half, while Coman and Sane constantly found space in the channels. And Coman eventually found a breakthrough late in the second half, with the Frenchman left completely unmarked in the United box.

Sofyan Amrabat and Scott McTominay offered a whole lot of nothing when United needed something spectacular. They were outplayed by Bayern's midfielders and left chasing shadows, demonstrating the gulf in quality between the two sides.

United's dearth of creativity can be attributed to a poor midfield selection. And while Ten Hag had no one better available at his disposal against Bayern, his decision to sign Amrabat in the summer looks worse by the day.

Supporting Hojlund

The striker went into the game as the joint top-scorer in the competition. But he had little to feed off as he was constantly muscled off the ball and surrounded by opposition defenders on his first touch.

The most concerning thing about Ten Hag's tenure thus far is the lack of any real attacking patterns – and Hojlund is certainly a victim of that. Ten Hag may complain about not having the same quality of players that he had at his disposal at Ajax, but other managers are currently doing far more with less.

Ten Hag did, however, manage to get a couple of things right:

Faith in Onana

It is easy to lose trust in your goalkeeper when they've made as many howlers as Andre Onana has this season. The £47.2million shot-stopper is a big part of why United found themselves in the dire position they were in at this point, having made howlers in the first game at Bayern and against Galatasaray.

But the Cameroonian repaid the faith placed in him by Ten Hag on Tuesday night. He handled the ball with care and made none of the nervy mistakes which have followed him thus far in his United career.

Positive-ish spirits

Just days after it was reported that Ten Hag had lost half of the United dressing room, United responded with a unified display. They defended together and worked hard to track Bayern's many dangerous forwards.

Having said that, the atmosphere inside Old Trafford and the importance of the occasion meant that any player not giving 100% would have disgraced themselves more than anything, even if they didn't necessarily agree with the manager's ways.
