There were ructions in the Chelsea ranks as well as Arsenal’s following the award of the Blues’ early penalty.

After a bright start to the game from the home side, the ball hit the arm of William Saliba following a cross from the right. Referee Chris Kavanagh eventually stopped the game after being advised to go and look at the pitchside monitor by VAR.

He decided to give the penalty, prompting arguments from Arsenal players. However, there was also a debate raging among Chelsea players as Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling bickered over who was taking the spot-kick.

Eventually, Enzo Fernandez had to come between the pair, gesturing that it was Palmer’s penalty. The former Manchester City forward did take the spot-kick and gave his side the lead before being congratulated by the far more experienced Sterling.

Chelsea fans were quick to hail Fernandez for intervening and ensuring the squabble didn’t boil over. One said: “Enzo telling Sterling to f*** off and let Cole Palmer take the PK. Proper leader.” Another added: “Sterling would have missed.”

A third declared: “Enzo is a true leader man, he told Sterling to give the penalty to Palmer when he was trying to take it for himself. Wow.” A fourth said: “Wow, just saw the replay of Enzo intervening and telling Sterling to let Palmer take the pen. Don't have to be captain to act like one. Love Enzo.”

A fifth commented: “Sterling really wanted to take the penalty, but Enzo stepped in and said no, Cole Palmer is taking it. That's some Leadership qualities.”

Another fan pointed out: “Sterling didn't show such eagerness to take a penalty in the euro 20 final.”
