It’s back to black on the W Awards’ coral carpet

It’s been guernseys and footy boots for players in the women’s AFL league over the past three months, but at Monday night’s W Awards, it was all heels and dress shoes as the sporting stars let loose.
AFLW stars shone on the coral carpet in the Crown Palladium, many arm-in-arm with equally dazzling partners. Simple, silky numbers dominated the evening, with many sporting the classic LBD (little black dress) and slicked-back up-dos.

Richmond’s star midfielder and last year’s Tigers best and fairest winner, Monique Conti, floated down the carpet in a black Cappellazzo couture gown, its modest train trailing behind her and her sister, Gabby, who glowed in a pastel yellow dress.
“I wanted something chic and elegant. I’m not really a colour girl,” she said.
Other players preferred pops of colour to mark the occasion – particularly pastel shades of purple, blue and yellow – such as Melbourne Demons captain Kate Hore, who adorned a baby blue silk slit dress.
“We’ve been in the COVID room the past couple of years, but we’re in the main hall tonight, so look out for the Dees’ table,” Hore said.
Despite Adelaide’s loss to North Melbourne in Sunday’s game, midfielder Ebony Marinoff gracefully walked the carpet as one of the evening’s favourites to win. “I wasn’t planning to be here, but losing yesterday brought us here,” she said. “We flew home last night and were back this morning, so it’s been a [big] 24 hours.”
The night of nights for the women’s league was sprinkled with celebrity appearances, including Amy Shark, who performed during the award ceremony, as well as drummer G Flip and their partner, Chrishell Stause of Netflix’s Selling Sunset fame. The popular couple, who tied the knot in May, turned heads thanks to G Flip’s all-black ensemble (including black sunglasses) and Stause’s Y2K-inspired hot pink mini skirt and strapless corset top.
But it was ultimately the players who stole the show, including Collingwood’s Sarah Rowe who wowed in a multicoloured, shimmering mini-dress, replete with sparkling black bows down the bodice.
As the Grand Final approaches, Rowe had end-of-season traditions on her mind. “Being Irish, it’s usually a drink that I love to have. I’m fond of a margarita and an espresso martini.”

Others weren’t planning on stopping for a second, however, such as Conti – who doubles as a professional WNBL player. “There’s no such thing as an off-season. We have some fun with the girls and then [I] go train basketball.”
