Mick Schumacher told to find job away from F1 as Kravitz shares Wolff worries

Mick Schumacher has been told that he needs to find another racing series to compete in for the 2024 season by Ted Kravitz after he shared Toto Wolff’s concern that ‘all of the doors are closing’ for the German to return to the grid next year.

The 24-year-old has been working as Mercedes’ test and reserve driver for the 2023 season, learning from Lewis Hamilton and George Russell while helping the team out in the simulator ahead of race weekends.

While this has been a valuable experience for Schumacher, the long-term aim remains a full-time F1 return with the German racer unable to demonstrate the true extent of his talents during his time in struggling Haas machinery.

Speaking during Ted’s Notebook for Sky Sports F1, Kravitz explained: “Toto Wolff was [told] can you get a berth for Mick Schumacher, your development driver, your reserve driver for next year? Is there opportunity at Williams maybe, if they don’t keep Logan Sargeant?

“Toto Wolff said unfortunately for Mick, it looks like all the doors are being closed in front of him. So if you’re a fan of Mick Schumacher, and let’s face it who isn’t, sadly it doesn’t look like Mick Schumacher is going to be back on the grid next year.

“In which case, he’s gonna have to find a different series to race in, because you can’t have two years away from racing, that would just really hurt too much for him. Maybe there will be a place at Williams turn up because Logan Sargeant had a little bit of a disappointing day today, but let’s see.”

Schumacher’s hopes of an F1 team have so far hinged on Williams dropping Sargeant after a troubled rookie campaign. The American driver has suffered his fair share of expensive shunts in 2023 and is yet to score a point, despite team-mate Alex Albon notching 21 in total.

Wolff has previously discussed what Schumacher would bring to an F1 team. Speaking earlier this summer, the Mercedes team boss insisted: “I think teams are missing out, to be honest. I think he was burned last year.

“You need to give and provide an environment and framework that is different to every driver, we are all different human beings. And whoever gets him will have a very good driver.”
