Michael Schumacher’s son Mick could land new role for 2024 after losing F1 seat

Mick Schumacher is in talks with Alpine over a return to racing after losing his Formula One seat.

The 24-year-old son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael is currently Mercedes’ reserve driver. He was dumped by Haas in favour of the experienced Nico Hulkenberg at the end of the 2022 season after two underwhelming and costly years with the American-owned team.

He faces another year on the sidelines despite a space potentially opening up to replace Williams driver Logan Sargeant on the grid. But the German could now make his return behind the wheel for Alpine – though it would not be in one of their F1 seats.

Schumacher has been offered a chance to race for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship with its LMDh squad. Interim Alpine team principal Bruno Famin made no secret of ongoing talks between the two parties as they look to reach an agreement.

Famin said: "It’s true that we are talking with Mick about the possibility of racing in our endurance programme with the A424.

"It would be a good opportunity for both parties I think. But for the time being, we are just talking and hopefully we will organise a test soon."

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently gave Schumacher the green light to pursue racing outside of F1. The Austrian chief confirmed he would still keep his place as Mercedes’ reserve driver even if he takes on an outside project.

As well as the Champions League, TNT Sports will also be offering sports fans access to games across the Premier League, Europa League, Serie A and much more.

Mick’s new endeavour would see him follow in the footsteps of his dad Michael, who raced in the World Sportscar Championship in 1990 and 1991 with Sauber Mercedes.

Meanwhile, Alpine’s F1 line-up appears locked down for several seasons to come. New recruit Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon have both impressed in 2023 as the team’s all-French line-up, with the team sixth in the constructors standings.
