Martin Brundle pleased Lewis Hamilton went ‘steaming in’ on Max Verstappen

Martin Brundle has insisted that he enjoyed the way Lewis Hamilton took aim at Max Verstappen over the quality of his team-mates. The seven-time world champion claimed that his former colleagues had been much more dangerous opponents than those of the Dutchman.

Hamilton has been at the centre of the drama this weekend, committing to a new two-year contract extension with Mercedes as he looks to reignite his battle with Verstappen and Red Bull that saw the duo go toe-to-toe throughout the 2021 season.

Verstappen ultimately came out victorious on the final lap of the season finale at Abu Dhabi that season, but Hamilton remains hungry to claim his record-breaking eighth World Championship and put an end to the 25-year-old dominance.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about the Briton’s comments, Brundle explained: “I think it’s too dismissive of Max’s team-mates but it is a valid point about his world champions as team-mates. I hope this is the new Lewis after his new contract because normally he’s a lot more diplomatic than that.

“He was just steaming in with very firm opinions, almost putting it forward as knowledge, and I liked it. I like it a lot. I hope he keeps doing that. He was not going to give Max any oxygen whatsoever was he, at this moment?

“He could’ve been a little bit more grand about it, a little bit… He could’ve given Max something, because as we say, Max is quite extraordinary at the moment. The way he’s jelling with that team and the car and just reeling off these races is something to behold.”

These comments come as Verstappen continues to dominate Sergio Perez in the inter-team battle at Red Bull. The Dutchman was beaten by Checo in two of the opening four Grands Prix this season but has since rattled off nine successive race wins.

It isn’t just Perez that Verstappen has had the measure of during his F1 career. The two-time world champion made life a misery for both Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon, while also enjoying a better time against Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz.

Hamilton pointed this out ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, telling Sky Sports F1: “In my personal opinion, all my team-mates have been stronger than the team-mates Max has had: Jenson [Button], Fernando [Alonso], George [Russell], Valtteri [Bottas], Nico [Rosberg].

“I’ve had so many. These guys have all been very, very strong, very consistent – and Max has not raced against anyone like that.”
