F1 star has crashed so often he has cost his team ‘triple his wages’ in repairs

F1 rookie Logan Sargeant has reportedly cost Williams more than three times his salary in crash repairs.

The 22-year-old American has endured a tricky first season on the grid, struggling to keep his car on track on multiple occasions – with his latest accident coming in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix last weekend.

He's now the costliest driver so far this year, racking up a $3.9million (£3.2m) repair bill according to data compiled by Reddit user basspro24chevy. That's well over triple the annual wage he's claimed to earn by RacingNews365, $1m (£820k).

Sargeant's seat is the only one left yet to be decided for 2024. The impressive performances of Liam Lawson since he stepped up for the injured Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri have piled on the pressure further, while Mick Schumacher has been repeatedly linked with a return to the grid.

But Williams team principle James Vowles has given their current driver his backing today (September 28). Speaking in his latest edition of Vowles Verdict, the Brit said: “Logan has very clear targets of what he has to hit before the end of the season, and we are working with him, we want him to succeed and we want him in the car next year."

Vowles also shouldered some of the blame for Sargeant's struggles, continuing: “This is very much on us as well. We've taken someone straight out of Formula 2, put him a day and a half in Bahrain in this car, and then wished them well on a season that has been awfully challenging for rookie drivers full stop.”

He went on to explain that team-mate Alex Albon has received more upgrades on his car, which is part of the reason for the difference in their timings.

“We will continue to work with Logan and invest in Logan, as we want him to succeed as the result of the journey he’s on," Vowles added. "He’s on a journey with us as Williams. We have a young driver programme that we will continue to invest in.

“Only at the point where all of us come to the conclusion that we’ve reached the end of that road, will we make any decisions, but we’re nowhere near that yet.”
