Christian Horner bemoans Sergio Perez ‘shocker’ despite Red Bull celebrations

Christian Horner has labelled Sergio Perez’s weekend a ‘shocker’ after the Mexican driver was involved in two collisions and handed two penalties at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Perez endured a miserable time on his latest trip to Suzuka, qualifying down in fifth place while team-mate Max Verstappen dominated on his way to pole position.

The 33-year-old was then involved in a lap one incident with Lewis Hamilton that cost him his front-wing end plate and a trip to the pit lane for repairs.

Things got worse from there when Checo overtook Alonso before the safety car line, earning him a five-second time penalty and adding to his woes.

After exiting the pit lane behind the safety car, Perez’s afternoon got even worse. Red Bull’s number two driver collided with Haas’ Kevin Magnussen following a desperate lunge into the hairpin, earning him another penalty and effectively ending the Danish driver’s race.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about Checo’s dismal weekend, Horner said: “Yeah it was a shocker of a race for him today. It got off to a bad start where he sort of got concertinaed on the run down to turn one.

“He picked up some front wing damage, then we need to change the front wing. He overtook Fernando on the way into the pit lane, then picked up a penalty and then came out.
