Christian Horner and Helmut Marko clash again in fresh Daniel Ricciardo debate

Christian Horner and Helmut Marko reportedly disagree over what to do with Daniel Ricciardo. The two Red Bull authority figures have been at the forefront of the news ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

According to a report from Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf, there is a disagreement internally about the future of Ricciardo with Marko still holding a grudge against the Australian after he opted to leave the team for Renault back in 2018.

Ricciardo’s relationship with Horner, however, remains strong with the report stating that the 34-year-old will be first in line to replace Sergio Perez should Red Bull decide to part ways with the Mexican driver prematurely at the end of the current campaign.

This disagreement follows reports that Horner and Marko are locked into a power struggle at Red Bull with the team principal hoping to secure more influence within the set-up off the back of a second successive Constructor Championship title.

Despite these reported disagreements, Horner remains convinced that there are no internal issues at the Milton Keynes-based team. “We speak very regularly about all aspects,” Horner told Mirror Sport ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

“For Helmut, it’s slightly different to how it used to be since the passing of his friend and colleague Dietrich, but he still has a very valuable role that he plays within the team and there is absolutely no intent or desire from me, or anyone within the team, to see that change.

“For as long as he wants to continue – he’s still a very spritely 80-year-old – I don’t see any change in the way that we work. Roles evolve and the business has evolved so much since we first came into the sport.

“Operationally, I run this on a day-to-day basis. For any significant decisions, of course we confer, whether it be drivers or strategic calls. It’s a partnership that has worked for many, many years. Everybody has their role and function to play.”

However, if there are any disagreements over Ricciardo’s potential return then they will need to be ironed out promptly. As Checo continues to slip into the clutches of third-placed Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship standings, speculation is growing that he could well be ousted from his seat at the end of the current campaign.
