Devon Toews says he wants to sign long-term with Avalanche

Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews hopes to reach an agreement with the organization on a contract extension before the 2023-24 season, he said Wednesday during the team’s preseason media day.

“My intent is to stay here the rest of my career,” Toews said.

The 29-year-old blueliner is entering the last year of a team-friendly deal with an average annual value of $4.1 million, which occupies 4.9% of the team’s salary cap space in the upcoming season (excluding Gabriel Landeskog’s $7 million).

He’s coming off his second consecutive 50-point season, in which 37 of his 43 assists in 2022-23 were at even strength. Playing on one of the NHL’s most potent defensive pairings with Cale Makar, Toews finished 14th in Norris Trophy voting.

Toews said he has “had talks” with the front office this summer about an extension.
