England’s white-ball tour of the Caribbean to trial stop clock between overs in a bid to speed up pace of play

• Fielding team must start a new over within a minute of the previous one ending 
• England’s tour of Caribbean next month will be played under these conditions

The ICC will experiment with a stop clock between overs in white-ball internationals in a bid to speed up the pace of play.

The trial, which will run from December to April, will require the fielding team to be ready to start a new over within a minute of the previous one ending, in Twenty20s and one-day internationals.

A penalty of five runs will be imposed if the fielding side fail three times in an innings to start the new over within 60 seconds.

England’s tour of the Caribbean for a white-ball series next month will be played under these conditions. 

The third umpire will be in charge of the stop clock.

Existing rules to combat slow over rates state that if the fielding team have not started the final over of the innings by a stated cut-off time, they are allowed one fielder fewer outside the 30-yard circle for the final over.

This was introduced in 2022 but will now be strengthened.
