Roy Keane was once banned from a Manchester United Christmas party – with his team-mates told not to go anywhere near him.

The midfield hardman had enjoyed a night out with the team’s reserves which resulted, in his words, a “bit of bother” in Manchester city centre. Word of the trouble got to back to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The legendary Old Trafford then brutally told the other first-team players not to go anywhere near the Irishman on their festive booze-up. Keane regaled the sad, albeit amusing, tale on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show with Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Jill Scott.

“Remember when I got banned from the Christmas do at United once?,” Keane said to Neville. “There were two dos. I might have been injured. The reserves were having a night out. I went out with the reserves and there must have been a bit of bother in Manchester or something. Obviously, I was trying to be the peacemaker.

“The first-team lads were going out one or two days later. Ferguson came in, in front of everyone, and said anyone seen drinking with me that day would be fined. So I wasn’t allowed to go to the Christmas do.”

Seemingly unaware of the incident in the question, Neville asked: “When was this?” Keane replied: “Christmas,” prompting laughter from the fellow guests.

The former Sunderland and Ipswich manager then added: “I ended up having a Christmas do by myself.” After leaving Wright shocked by his one-man party revelation, Keane added: “I went out by myself. I went round Altrincham, I had a great day.”

Keane had a distant relationship with Ferguson, revealing recently he never allowed himself to get close to any of his managers. He said on Sky Sports earlier this month: "That was never for me. I never believed in being 'pally' or close to any of the managers I worked with.

"[I] never had a bond there [with Ferguson], absolutely not. People like to believe that we had a good relationship, I probably had two or three private conversations with the manager during my time at the club."
