Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag pointed the finger at his Red Devils stars after they were knocked out of the Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday night. United went down to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich as Kingsley Coman scored the only goal of the night 20 minutes before the end.

“We made mistakes,” Ten Hag told TNT Sports after the final whistle. “Some individuals errors from more players. In the end, it’s not good enough.”

The Dutchman then declared that his team had performed well against the German opponents, despite the fact they had just one shot on target all night. “Today the performance was very good and we didn’t deserve to lose but we lost the game,” he added.

“The team did very good, we were very good in defensive organisation, we were very good in pressing. We played against a strong side. Bayern is a good team. We want to be more consistent. Me as a manger, I have to improve the team – I have to guide them and the team have to take responsibility.

You saw the spirit. I have to credit them a big compliment for how they worked together as a team against this good Bayern side. The options were limited [from the bench]. The target was over the winter [to reach the knockout stages] but we didn’t make it. We have to accept it, we have to learn from it. We have to take some good performance into the Premier League if we want to be back in the Champions League [next season].”

The damage for United had been done long before the visit of Bayern, with the Red Devils picking up just four points from their opening five matches. Ten Hag’s side had been defeated by Bayern in Germany in September and had also suffered defeats at home to Galatasaray and away to Copenhagen in the autumn.
