A frustrated Alan Shearer dropped the F-bomb when debating Newcastle’s recent struggles with Gary Lineker.

The Magpies have suffered two defeats on the bounce, losing 3-0 away at Everton before suffering a 4-1 drubbing against Tottenham on Sunday. It marks a huge downturn in form for Eddie Howe’s side compared to the start of the season, having also endured a number of injuries.

Various news outlets have pointed out that tiredness is the reason behind Newcastle’s lacklustre performances, while pundit Chris Sutton also blamed “jadedness” in November. But Toon legend Shearer and fellow Match of the Day star Gary Lineker were in agreement in rubbishing those claims.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said: “Overall an excellent performance from Spurs against a, I suppose, jaded looking Newcastle. I don’t quite buy that. Did you ever feel jaded in your day? You just get on with it, don’t you?”

Shearer replied: “In fairness to Eddie Howe and the players, I’ve never heard one of them say that they’re tired. But all I keep hearing is reporters and presenters and pundits saying how tired they must be.

“Forgive me for thinking anything different but isn’t it their f***ing job to play football? Isn’t that what they get paid for?

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels. Sky Sports is the only way to watch all the action this year.

£22 a month

“Come on, Al,” BBC colleague Micah Richards pleaded, before Shearer added: “It’s a lack of options in the final twenty minutes for Newcastle – not a tiredness thing – and I’ll never accept that players play too much football because they have the best sports science, best pitches and best physios.”

He went on to say: “The problem is that from the age of seven, for the last twenty years, all we’ve ever heard is that ‘you can’t play more than three games a week – you’re playing too much football’. Do me a f***ing favour.”

Lineker agreed, saying: “Absolutely, Alan. I’ll say one thing, in the last 20 years, the two greatest footballers on this planet have hardly missed a football match.”

Whatever the reason may be behind Newcastle’s recent defeats, Howe will hope for a quick solution as they eye a decisive Champions League fixture against AC Milan on Wednesday. The north-east club need a victory at home, while hoping that Kylian Mbappe’s PSG fall short against Dortmund, if they are to progress to the last-16.

Their form has also seen them drift away from the top-four in the Premier League. Newcastle currently sit seventh in the table, seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
