Manchester United made a mistake by signing Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund over Declan Rice and Harry Kane in the summer, according to Teddy Sheringham. The Old Trafford icon has criticised Erik ten Hag’s recruitment, claiming it is no surprise his side are slumped sixth in the Premier League.

United opted against splashing north of £100million to complete a dream transfer for Kane, who was reportedly keen to join from Tottenham Hotspur.

Ten Hag, instead, sanctioned a £72m deal for Hojlund, who had just 87 senior club appearances under his belt, while the England captain moved to Bayern Munich.

And while Kane has unsurprisingly scored 22 goals in his first 19 Bayern games, Hojlund is yet to find the net in his first 12 Premier League outings.

The 20-year-old has shown glimpses of his potential in the Champions League, though, scoring five in as many Group A games.

The same can’t be said for Mount, who has endured a woeful start to life in M16 after being the subject of a £60m transfer from Chelsea.

Mount has struggled to fit into Ten Hag’s side, with reoccurring injuries playing their part in his early woes.

How United were not in for Declan Rice and Harry Kane at the start of the season is beyond me,” Sheringham told Gambling Zone.

He added: “Top players elevate you. They elevate the players around them and raise standards. Fergie would always bring in that type of player if he felt it would improve his team.

“These are the type of players that perform to a high standard every single week. These are the type of players that can drag a team over the line in a tight game.
