Contact IAKO@dailymail.co.uk<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FIFA president Gianni Infantino has slammed the &#8216;totally unacceptable&#8217; attack on a Turkish referee and demanded for action to be taken.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Turkish football descended into chaos on Monday night after MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca launched the vicious attack\u00a0on referee Halil Umut Meler after his side drew 1-1 against Caykur Rizespor in the\u00a0Super Lig.<\/p>\n<p>Disgraceful images show Koca&#8217;s fist connecting with the referee&#8217;s cheek just beneath his left eye, sending the official falling to the ground before others then laid into him with a series of kicks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The referee has been pictured in a hospital bed sporting a black eye among other facial injuries, while also wearing a neck brace. Referees, players, fans and staff have to be safe and secure to enjoy the game, and I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is strictly implemented and respected at all levels.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The shocking scenes were condemned by the country&#8217;s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the aftermath of the match.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After wishing the referee a speedy recovery, Erdogan said: &#8216;Sports means peace and brotherhood. Sport is incompatible with violence. We will never allow violence to take place in Turkish sports.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Fans, as well as club officials, invaded the pitch after Rizespor scored a 97th-minute equaliser.<\/p>\n<p>A large crowd of players, coaching staff and security were quick to race to the scene and stop the attack, with the shaken Meler eventually helped to his feet. After being led away, he was seen sporting a swollen eye.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police escorted the referee to safety, and reports have suggested that he said the incident was his fault.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0It was not immediately clear whether Meler was apologising for the large amount of injury time or the sending off of two players. The match featured eight minutes of injury time and a red card for each side, with Rizespor defender Emirhan Top\u00e7u sent off in the 95th minute, two minutes before the equalising goal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/12\/10\/78861219-12854109-image-a-1_1702375753000.jpg\" height=\"357\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The referee at the centre of the Turkish football shutdown has been pictured for the first time in hospital after he was punched to the ground and kicked in the face at the end of a match<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/12\/11\/78861217-12854109-Turkish_president_Recep_Tayyip_Erdo_an_visited_the_stricken_refe-a-9_1702378956523.jpg\" height=\"359\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Turkish president\u00a0Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the stricken referee in hospital on Tuesday<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that the referee was left with a cheek fracture, while\u00a0Koca &#8211; who is reported to have heart problems &#8211; was hospitalised as a precaution, but would later taken into custody following treatment,\u00a0Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.<\/p>\n<p>Later, it was reported that\u00a0Koca &#8211; who registered a blood pressure of 190 &#8211; had been sent to an Ankara courthouse along with six others involved in the incident. These incidents, which especially damage the brand value of Turkish football and the image of Turkish football abroad, cause great damage to football.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I was shocked. Why did the president and his friends attack a referee like that? Why do they kick the referee on the ground? He has also given a statement, according to Turkish media.<\/p>\n<p>They also reported that he had become a father just days ago.\u00a0It is not known when matches in the division will resume.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ankaragucu, meanwhile, has issued an apology to football fans for what it called the &#8216;sad incident&#8217; that unfolded after the match.<\/p>\n<h3>GET IN TOUCH\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>We want to hear from refs who have been abused &#8211; or parents who have witnessed atrocious behaviour on the touchline<\/p>\n<p>Email us at:\u00a0IAKO@dailymail.co.uk<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, the club said: &#8216;As MKE Ankaragucu Sports Club, we are saddened by the incident that took place this evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We apologise to the Turkish football public and the entire sports community for the sad incident that occurred after the \u00c7aykur Rizespor match at Eryaman Stadium.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In its own statement, Rizespor used stronger language, calling for &#8216;no violence in sports&#8217;.\u00a0The team said: &#8216;<span>We strongly condemn the undesirable events that occurred after the Ankaragucu match we played today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8216;We convey our wishes to the entire referee community, especially the referee of the match, Halil Umut Meler, to get well soon.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meler has been a Fifa referee since 2017, the AFP news agency reports. Officials in Turkey are often criticised by club managers and presidents for their decisions &#8211; but rarely are they on the receiving end of violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Koca, 59, has been the president of Ankaragucu since 2021.
