Bruno Fernandes has made an alarming admission that his Manchester United side may have thought their match against Bournemouth was ‘going to be easy’ despite suffering a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke shocked the Red Devils, scoring inside the first five minutes of the match, with Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi both scoring in the second half to see Bournemouth extend their unbeaten streak to five matches on the bounce.

But after the match, the United captain blasted his team’s performance claiming that their levels were lower than that of their opponents.

‘We lacked many things and that’s why we don’t get the result today,’ he said of his team, who despite having more possession and attempts on goal, could not find the back of the net.

‘Everything was lower than the levels in the game before and that’s why when you play teams like Bournemouth, who are really aggressive and on the front foot, they press you, and you think it’s going to be easy, you get these kinds of results.’

United have now amassed the unwanted record of suffering more losses at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, 35, than the legendary manager suffered at home during his 21-season spell in charge of the club, 34.

It’s also Erik ten Hag’s side’s fourth defeat at home this season, and despite coming into the game off the back of a 2-1 win against Chelsea, the Portuguese midfielder said his team lacked in many areas on Saturday afternoon.

‘Everything was underperforming,’ he said. ‘Creativity, movement and arriving with bodies into the box.

‘Most of the time we arrived with one or two players, but in the last game we had more getting in the box to score a goal.’

United also have a tough string of fixtures coming up, with the Red Devils set to welcome Bayern Munich to Old Trafford in midweek, before taking on Liverpool the following Sunday.

They will be without their captain for that match at Anfield after Fernandes picked up a yellow card during the game – his fifth of the season.

‘Today, it was, as I said, underperforming,’ he added. ‘We just lack consistency and that’s a big part of football. It’s really important to be consistent every game and we’re not being.’

His comments were echoed online by former United defender Gary Neville.

‘Consistently Inconsistent! An abysmal result..’ the Sky pundit wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Despite the defeat, the Red Devils are still only three points off Manchester City in fourth place.

But Ten Hag also blasted his team after the game, claiming that they lacked focus throughout the game.

‘You have to start right and 100 per cent focused so everyone is eager. It can’t happen that opponents are more eager than we are,’ he told BBC Sport.

The Dutchman added: ‘We had good spells of football. But there were moments when we were not good enough.

‘We make mistakes and you can’t make such mistakes. On this level, the opponent will take benefit from it. You can’t switch off and we have to work on that.

‘If you want to be successful and achieve the targets you set, you need consistent performances and you need to do it every third day.’

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football, launching with a preview show today and every week this season.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube , Apple Music and Spotify

Your browser does not support iframes.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!
