Chelsea legend Ruud Gullit says he wants his former side to lose to Everton so the Toffees have a better chance of staying in the Premier League.

The Dutchman, who won the Ballon d'Or in 1987, joined Chelsea as a player in 1995 before becoming player/manager a year later. He ended the club's 27-year wait for a major trophy by winning the FA Cup in 1997 and ushered in an era of exciting, continental football at Stamford Bridge by signing a host of exotic foreign stars like Gianfranco Zola, Gianluca Vialli and Frank Leboeuf.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea's trip to Everton on Sunday, Gullit said he felt sorry for Sean Dyche's men after they were handed a 10-point deduction for falling foul of Financial Fair Play regulations last month. He said he was rooting for Everton in the fight to stave off relegation and wouldn't mind it if they took all three points tomorrow afternoon.

"I feel for Everton, and I think everybody feels a bit of sympathy for them," Gullit told Gambling Zone. "I also like Sean Dyche as a coach. He knows the game very well and he hasn't always had the best players to work with. What he does with his team is fantastic despite that. People tend to forget that.

‌"I want Everton to stay in the Premier League, and I wouldn't mind if they got a result against Chelsea! I say that only due to Everton's situation, though. I'm still a massive Chelsea supporter and I want them to win (games)! However, I have sympathy for Everton and I want them to stay up."

Chelsea have had a topsy-turvy start under Pochettino. For every strong performance there have been one or two underwhelming ones, and their inability to stay in the top half of the table is troubling. Their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday was their sixth of the season, and the team was booed off at full time.

Everton, meanwhile, are in flying form. They've won five of their last seven matches in all competitions, and a 3-0 thrashing of Newcastle in mid-week left Goodison Park jumping. The result moved the Merseyside club out of the relegation zone, and if it weren't for their points deduction they'd be above Chelsea. Everton have won four out of their last five meetings against the west Londoners at Goodison, though they've only managed one win over them in the last three years.

Gullit began his playing career at HFC Haarlem in 1979 before making waves at Feyenoord and later PSV. He then moved to AC Milan, where he won three Serie A titles and two European Cups in seven seasons. A short stint at Sampdoria followed before he wrapped his career up in England. He also played 66 times for Holland and helped fire them the European Championship glory in 1988.

Following a two-year stint in charge of Chelsea he moved to Newcastle, but lasted just over a year in the hotseat before getting sacked. A few years later, he had short spells at Feyenoord, LA Galaxy and Terek Grozny.
