{"id":301702,"date":"2023-12-07T12:39:34","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T12:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=301702"},"modified":"2023-12-07T12:39:34","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T12:39:34","slug":"liverpools-virgil-van-dijk-insists-jarell-quansah-is-ready-to-step-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/soccer\/liverpools-virgil-van-dijk-insists-jarell-quansah-is-ready-to-step-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Liverpool&apos;s Virgil van Dijk insists Jarell Quansah is READY to step up"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1> Virgil van Dijk insists fellow Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah is &#8216;READY&#8217; to step up at Anfield after Joel Matip&#8217;s ACL injury&#8230; urging that the 20-year-old &#8216;has done well&#8217; in every opportunity so far<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Joel Matip ruptured his ACL against Fulham and likely will be out all campaign<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0But Virgil van Dijk believes Jarell Quansah, 20, is ready to step up for Liverpool<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s wonderful, but we&#8217;re bamboozled by what Big Ange is doing &#8211; IAKO<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Virgil van Dijk says 20-year-old defender Jarell Quansah is more than ready to step up and play a pivotal role in Liverpool\u2019s successes after it was confirmed that Joel Matip has ruptured his ACL and will likely not play again this season.<\/p>\n<p>Matip immediately gestured to be substituted during a 50-50 challenge in Liverpool\u2019s win over Fulham on Sunday and scans revealed that the 32-year-old will require surgery. That will likely end his season and perhaps his Reds career, with his contract up in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>It leaves Liverpool thin on the ground in defensive areas with just captain Van Dijk, injury-prone Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez, who is also used as a back-up full-back. But Englishman Quansah has taken every opportunity so far and will continue to do so, says Van Dijk.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Every time he has had the opportunity so far he has done well,\u2019 said the captain. \u2018When the moment is there for him &#8211; like every other player who will come in when we rotate or have injuries or suspensions &#8211; they have to be ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That goes for him as well. We still have Ibou, Joey, but Jarell is a very good option as well. In general, for all the younger generation, if you are close to the first team and training with us, you have to soak everything in. And he is doing well.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/07\/11\/78686959-12836905-image-a-1_1701946986257.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Virgil van Dijk says 20-year-old defender Jarell Quansah (above) is more than ready to step up<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/07\/11\/78686945-12836905-image-a-2_1701946997031.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Every time (Quansah) has had the opportunity so far he has done well,\u2019 the Reds captain said<\/p>\n<p>Quansah spent time on loan at League One Bristol Rovers last season and Klopp admitted recently that even he was surprised at the fast progress the youngster has made. He has earned call-ups and played for England\u2019s Under 21s team in the last months.<\/p>\n<p>The Warrington-born defender joined Liverpool aged five and captained the Reds\u2019 Under 18s to the FA Youth Cup final in 2021. Van Dijk added: \u2018He\u2019s a good boy. It\u2019s good to see. He wants to learn and he is learning. Like every one of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If you told me at the start of the season that he would be doing as well as he is doing, I would say you are lying. He is progressing, learning and wants to do it as well. Joel is a fantastic player and has been for so many years. As a friend, it\u2019s difficult to see. Knowing what he will go through now, the next weeks, months, it\u2019s tough.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are here for him. Whenever he needs us we will be here for him. Let\u2019s see how it goes. Let\u2019s hope the surgery will go well and the route to getting back starts. I reached out to him already. I spoke to Joey (Gomez) after we got the news.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Me and Joey can relate. We know what he will go through, what his family will go through. It\u2019s not easy. With the support he will get from us as a team, that\u2019s the least we can do and we will do.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Matip\u2019s blow adds to a mounting injury crisis at Liverpool. Alisson, Andy Robertson, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic are all on the sidelines.
