Erik ten Hag’s tough-love management style has reportedly seen him lose support of half of the Manchester United squad.

The Red Devils crashed to another damaging defeat at the weekend as they lost 1-0 at Newcastle, who should have won by a far greater margin given their superiority. The Dutch coach has had a well-documented public spat with Jadon Sancho, who has been frozen out of the first team since September and looks set to leave the club in January.

With United well off the pace in the Premier League and in danger of crashing out of the Champions League before the knockout stage, various players are now disillusioned with Ten Hag’s no-nonsense coaching methods, according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol.

“My information, for what it’s worth, is that some players are confused about what is happening,” said Solhekol on Monday evening.

“He has lost elements of the dressing room, one source telling me that he’s lost about 50% of the dressing room. Quite a few players are unhappy with the style of play. They also feel they are running too hard and they’re running too much during training.

Is it time for Ten Hag to be sacked? Tell us in the comments section below

“And I was told the players don’t know what they’re running for. Also, some senior players have spoken to Erik ten Hag about where they feel the club is going wrong.

“They’ve spoken to him about their experiences of playing for other big clubs. They maybe feel he should be a little more touchy-feely, his man-management could be a little bit better.

“But you know what, Erik ten Hag is the boss, he’s the one who calls the shots and he is not for turning. He is going to do things his way.”

Solhekol added: “I’ve also been told that a few of the players believe that he is too set in his ways, he’s too robotic and, as we’ve spoken about before, quite a few of the players are unhappy with the way Jadon Sancho has been treated.”
