Handball decisions at next year’s European Championship will be aided by ball-tracking technology that detects when an infringement has been committed, according to reports.

The handball rule often provokes controversial discussion and UEFA hope the state-of-the-art technology used in the tournament ball will nullify any erroneous decisions being made.

UEFA has invested in the Fussballliebe to help aid match officials with a similar design having already been successfully deployed by FIFA in making offside calls at last year’s World Cup.

The microchipped ball features a detection system behind the outer layer that branches out throughout the entirety of the ball and will be used at Euro 2024, as reported by The Times.

Video Assistant Referees will benefit from the combination of limb-tracking and the newly designed ball when making offside calls and handballs at the tournament taking place in Germany.

The technology will give decision-makers a 3D representation of players’ skeletons, with the ball being able to pinpoint exactly where it hit individuals on their body.

Incidents where the ball has hit a hand in the box and could lead to a penalty is when the technology will most likely often be used, however it won’t overrule any decision made by officials.

Premier League systems currently rely on video replays that are replayed to officials in a VAR room to determine whether a handball offence has been committed.

Newcastle recently felt aggrieved in their Champions League draw against PSG when Tino Livramento was penalised for handling the ball.

A similar incident also occurred in Man United’s European defeat against Bayern Munich when midfielder Christian Eriksen was judged to have done the same.

However, decisions can still be hard to make when the ball strikes a hand close to the body, the new ball technology is likely to make such incidents easier to determine the correct outcome.

The newly-designed Adidas match-ball is able to detect when the ball was kicked and along with cameras inside every stadium at the tournament will also assist in providing pinpoint offside decisions.

The Fussballliebe isn’t currently set to be used in the UEFA Champions League that currently relies on cameras to make offside and handball rulings.

The ball can be charged via induction and should speed up decision-making in-game to stop lengthy delays ocurring.
