England will return to the 'cursed' Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen next summer when they try and usher football home at Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate's side discovered their fate on Saturday evening, when they were drawn in a group with Slovenia, Denmark, and Serbia. And after the Three Lions open their campaign against Serbia at the Arena AufSchalke – which might ring some bells for football fans.

England have already graced the stadium in Gelsenkirchen during their 2006 World Cup campaign. On that occasion, it was the last dance for Sven Goran Eriksson's Golden Generation.

England were dumped out of the tournament by Portugal in a game that has gone down in infamy on these shores. The Three Lions crashed out on penalties, again, with only Owen Hargreaves getting his shot on target.

However, the match is best remembered for Wayne Rooney's red card after he appeared to stamp on Ricardo Carvalho. And as Rooney made his way off the pitch, then-Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo aimed a wink in the direction of the referee.

What do you think of England's Euro 2024 draw? Let us know in the comments section

Rooney, writing for The Sunday Times in 2020, revealed: "I knew it was a red card and back in the dressing room I watched the rest of the game on a little TV, thinking: 'If we win this, I’m suspended for a World Cup semi-final and final and if we lose it’s my fault'.

"It was the worst, weirdest feeling I’ve had in football. I had my phone in my hand and I was getting all these messages about Ronaldo.

"Of course, when he ran over to ask Elizondo to send me off I pushed him away. In that moment I couldn’t believe what he was doing. But sitting in that dressing room gave me time to calm down and think.

"I put myself in Ronaldo’s shoes. Would I do the same? Probably. Would I be in the ref’s face to make sure he got sent off? If he deserved the red, if it would help us win — yes, no question. I’d do it tomorrow."

England will hoping to lay that ghost to rest on June 16, before they square off with Denmark in the second game. Southgate's side will complete their group against Slovenia.
