{"id":300996,"date":"2023-11-30T15:24:44","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T15:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=300996"},"modified":"2023-11-30T15:24:44","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T15:24:44","slug":"owen-names-two-ex-england-team-mates-he-resents-after-world-cup-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/soccer\/owen-names-two-ex-england-team-mates-he-resents-after-world-cup-woes\/","title":{"rendered":"Owen names TWO ex-England team-mates he &apos;RESENTS&apos; after World Cup woes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Michael Owen names TWO former England team-mates he &#8216;RESENTS&#8217; after World Cup failures&#8230; and admits he is tortured at night &#8216;wondering how we never won something&#8217; with the Golden Generation<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Michael Owen still reserves some ill feelings towards ex-England team-mates<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>The former striker still lies awake wondering how they didn&#8217;t win something<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Andre Onana&#8217;s place as Man United No 1 is in doubt &#8211; Listen to It&#8217;s All Kicking Off\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Michael Owen has revealed he still &#8216;resents&#8217; two former England team-mates after their mistakes at one World Cup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former striker played at three World Cups for his country but never made it past the quarter-finals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Owen became England&#8217;s youngest World Cup goalscorer ever in 1998 and went on to score 40 goals for the Three Lions.<\/p>\n<p>And it is for two teammates from that tournament &#8211; when England crashed out to Argentina on penalties in the last 16 &#8211; that he reserves a special grudge for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He named David Beckham and Paul Ince as the unlucky souls, with the former sent off for kicking Diego Simeone in retaliation and the latter missing a penalty in the 4-3 shoot-out loss.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/30\/14\/78424477-0-image-a-71_1701353869425.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Michael Owen admitted he still &#8216;resents&#8217; two England team-mates after the 1998 World Cup<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/30\/14\/78424533-0-image-a-72_1701353936302.jpg\" height=\"464\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The first player he named was David Beckham, who was sent off for kicking out at Diego Simeone after being fouled\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/30\/14\/78424623-0-image-m-74_1701354119714.jpg\" height=\"497\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>He also &#8216;resents&#8217; Paul Ince for &#8216;choosing to shoot the ball one way&#8217; in the penalty shootout, with his effort saved\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Firstly, I don&#8217;t believe David Beckham&#8217;s kick out at Diego Simeone should&#8217;ve been a red card, but that is irrelevant. He made a mistake and that is where my resentment lies,&#8217; Owen told William Hill&#8217;s Up Front with Simon Jordan podcast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;For a lot of players you only get one shot at a World Cup, and he made a big mistake \u2013 he would admit that. You could say that it contributed to us being knocked out and that is a big thing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;You can resent a lot of things if you use that word, and I do resent a lot of things. Paul Ince missed a penalty and I resent him choosing to shoot the ball one way instead of the other, in the same way I resent Beckham making the decision to kick out at Simeone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I resent his actions for all manner of reasons. It was a mistake that only he made and it makes you think that if he hadn&#8217;t done it, we could have beaten Argentina. I&#8217;m absolutely convinced that we would&#8217;ve beaten them with 11 men because we were the better team. We had an unbelievable team so of course I think to myself what could have been.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;England have a history of self-imploding. You have the Beckham red card and then you have the situation where Wayne Rooney stamped on Ricardo Carvalho. It makes you think that a lot of times when we have gone out of tournaments, it\u2019s not actually always for footballing reasons.
