Gavi is reportedly set to be sidelined for up to ten months and will miss Euro 2024 after surgery on his ACL injury.

The Barcelona star was playing for Spain against Georgia in the qualifiers when he pulled up clutching his knee and subsequently left the pitch in tears.

Surgery on his right knee was successful, Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday morning.

However, the 19-year-old midfielder will miss the rest of the campaign and what would have been his first European Championship, as reported by ESPN.

Gavi has been instrumental for club and country this season, missing just two games for Barcelona through suspension.

‘It is a very difficult moment for Gavi, Barcelona, the national team and for me, it seems as if we have lost the game,’ Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente said after their 3-1 win over Georgia, calling it ‘the most bitter victory’ of his career.

Barca were reportedly incensed that Spain played him considering they had already qualified for next summer’s tournament in Germany.

Although in line for a possible £3.5-4.3million (€4-5m) pay-out from FIFA in compensation for the injury of the first-team starter, the club are concerned by what the loss of the teenager may do for their ability to compete across all competitions.

Gavi has featured 111 times for Barcelona across less than two-and-a-half seasons as a first-team player, underlining the extent to which he is relied upon.

Only Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Ilkay Gundogan had accumulated more playing time for the Catalan giants this campaign at the point of his injury.

As for the state of Barca’s midfield, Frenkie de Jong returned to the squad against Rayo Vallecano at the weekend after an ankle injury while Pedri has also come back into the fold in recent weeks.

Club captain Sergi Roberto, who can play in centre-midfield or right-back, has returned to training but is not expected to start their Champions League match against Porto.

Despite their depth of quality, there is no denying that losing Gavi is a gigantic blow to their prospects.

He won the Kopa Trophy and Golden Boy award last year but now his progress will be delayed

Thankfully for Barcelona, other players such as Frenkie de Jong are back in the fold

Last year he won the Kopa Trophy and the Golden Boy award, the accolades scooped up by Jude Bellingham for 2023, indicating his rapidly rising stock in global football.

A number of Gavi’s international team-mates paid tribute to the player after victory against Georgia, including goalscorer and Barca team-mate Ferran Torres, who held up the player’s No 9 shirt in celebration after netting Spain’s second.

Torres said that Gavi’s absence meant the win was ‘bittersweet’, whilst Robin Le Normand lamented that the team were unable to enjoy the 3-1 triumph.

‘We can’t celebrate as we would have liked,’ the scorer noted after bagging his debut international goal. ‘Gavi’s injury is a hard blow, I’m really gutted.’

He is not the only star to be affected by an ACL injury this season, as we have also seen Neymar, Jurrien Timnber, Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao, and others succumb to the torment.

It was a huge problem in women’s football last season, as Leah Williamson, Vivienne Miedema, and Beth Mead also suffered.
