Chris Sutton believes the Chelsea dressing room have some making up to do with Mauricio Pochettino following their 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle. Chelsea went into the weekend in high spirits with injured players returning to the squad and impressive displays against Manchester City and Tottenham before the international break.

A trip to St James’ Park was always going to be the trickiest test of all, but Chelsea capitulated at Newcastle’s home ground. Raheem Sterling’s equaliser midway through the first half put Chelsea in a strong position to take something from the game.

But they crumbled in the second half as Newcastle scored twice in the space of one minute after an uncharacteristic error from Thiago Silva. Reece James’ red card summed up the second half for Chelsea with Anthony Gordon rubbing salt into their wounds late on with Newcastle’s fourth.

Pochettino was furious at the final whistle and called the defeat their “worst game of the season”.

He said: “It was so easy the way that we conceded. We were soft in every single challenge, we should have shown we were playing for something important. That is why it made me angry and disappointed. We need to learn even if we talk about being a young team.

“These types of games make me very, very, very, very angry because they are about showing more personality and character.” And Sutton believes Pochettino’s words should act as a warning to the Chelsea squad to try and turn things around.
