When loud knocking could be heard coming through the ceiling in the middle of the night, enough was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Choccy (Brian McClair) and Jim McGregor, our physio, went upstairs and found a cleaner sat there banging on the ceiling,\u2019 recalls Gary Pallister. \u2018He just looked at them and walked off. Most of the lads were maybe 20 to 30 yards ahead of me and I was walking through by myself. I said good afternoon to this bellboy and he just went like that (throat slit gesture). I picked up my phone a couple of times during the night.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>United might not agree but Galatasaray\u2019s star striker Hakan Sukur insists there was no malice in the way their opponents were treated.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Naturally, there was such a welcome at the airport with &#8216;Welcome to Hell&#8217; banners. But, of course, this is a metaphor,\u2019 Sukur told Mail Sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think that rather than intimidating opponents, the excitement at the airport and stadiums was about conveying the atmosphere. We knew we could be making history that is still talked about today.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I read that fans did things to keep the opponent from sleeping well and to make them tired for the match. These were isolated incidents and not planned. It is sad that our country is remembered for these and similar events.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The old Ali Sami Yen was a cauldron befitting its nickname, The Hell. Phelan recalls it \u2018bouncing\u2019 hours before kick-off. \u2018I\u2019ve never seen an atmosphere quite like that,\u2019 says Pallister who was injured and sat in the stands with Mark Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The stadium was the loudest I\u2019ve played in,\u2019 adds Sukur. \u2018There wasn&#8217;t a single person not participating in the chants, knowing when and what to do. I think Manchester United will see this in the return match on Wednesday.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The game itself was largely forgettable, a goalless stalemate that saw United exit the second knockout round on away goals after drawing the first leg 3-3 at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n<p>It is remembered for the scenes at the final whistle after Eric Cantona was sent off for dissent. His hair&#8217;s all over the place, his tie is under his ear.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Bruce claimed he could have been killed by a brick that smashed a window of the team bus as United made their escape from the stadium. \u2018We went back to the hotel with the window missing,\u2019 Pallister says. \u2018The hostility is something I never experienced in the rest of my career. You look at that and think it can\u2019t get any worse.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s the best advice for United\u2019s players as they return to Istanbul for a must-win Group A tie at Rams Park on Wednesday?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Just play the game,\u2019 says Phelan. \u2018The best place to be is on the pitch.
