Mitchell van der Gaag will stand in as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in the dugout when Manchester United take on Everton on Sunday.

The Red Devils’ Premier League clash will see them travel to Goodison Park, with the Toffees coming off the back of a 10 point deduction. United boss Ten Hag is serving a one-match touchline ban, having picked up his third yellow card of the campaign against Luton.

In his place will be Van der Gaag – who will lead the bench with support from Eric Ramsay, Steve McClaren and Benni McCarthy. The Dutchman made the move to Old Trafford last summer to reunite with Ten Hag after serving as his assistant at Ajax.

And arguably his biggest involvement on the touchline to date comes a decade after he suffered a heart scare in the dugout while managing Portuguese side Belenenses. The 52-year-old had helped the club win the second division title the previous 2012/13 campaign.

But early on in his first term in the Primeira Liga, he collapsed during a 1-0 win against his former side Maritimo. He required two shocks from a defibrillator to save his life, before being forced to take a leave of absence.

Van der Gaag said at the time: “I'm alive today, it was a very violent thing that happened. I have a heart problem, some time ago, before arriving at Belenenses.

"I have a pacemaker and defibrillator. On Saturday during the game I felt bad and received two shocks and the unit saved my life. I have to leave work, because life is more important. Now my doctor is my coach."

Before becoming Ten Hag’s no.2, Van der Gaag had also been in charge of Cypriot club Ermis and Dutch sides Eindhoven, Excelsior and NAC, before taking over Ajax’s reserves.

His own playing career included spells at PSV, NEC, Utrecht and even Motherwell. The Dutchman ended his career by making 27 appearances for Al-Nassr in 2006/07.
