Tottenham\u00a0will pay tribute to their former manager and player Terry Venables before their home game with Aston Villa after his death at the age of 80.<\/p>\n
It was announced on Sunday that Venables, who also managed England, Barcelona\u00a0and Crystal Palace, had died following a long illness.<\/p>\n
Spurs players will wear black armbands ahead of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and there will also be a minute’s applause from supporters.<\/p>\n
In a statement on Sunday, Tottenham said: ‘The Club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘Our deepest condolences are with Terry’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Terry Venables won the FA Cup in 1991 after Tottenham beat Nottingham Forest in the final<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Venables signed both Paul Gascoigne (L) and Gary Lineker (R) during his time as Spurs boss<\/p>\n

Venables also won the FA Cup as player at Tottenham, representing the club between 1987 and 1991<\/p>\n
‘In tribute, we shall hold a minute’s applause prior to kick-off and our players will wear black armbands during this afternoon’s fixture against Aston Villa.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘Rest in peace, Terry.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Venables’ family said: ‘We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who were were so lucky to have had in our lives.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
Aston Villa also posted a tribute on X, formerly known as Twitter. The club said: ‘Everyone at Aston Villa is deeply saddened by the passing of former England manager Terry Venables.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘Ahead of kick-off against Terry\u2019s former club Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon, a minute\u2019s applause will take place in his memory. The thoughts and condolences of all at the club are with his family and friends at this time.’<\/p>\n
Venables, who played over 100 games for the club, returned to White Hart Lane as manager.<\/p>\n
After starting his playing career at Chelsea, Venables signed for Tottenham in 1965.<\/p>\n
He played 142 games for Tottenham and scored nine goals, winning the\u00a0FA Cup in 1967 as beat his former club Chelsea in the final. Venables left for Crystal Palace in 1969.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In 1987 Venables returned to Tottenham as the club’s manager and won the FA Cup in 1991, overcoming\u00a0Nottingham Forest in the final, while Spurs also shared the Charity Shield that year with rivals Arsenal.<\/p>\n
While in charge of Tottenham, Venables signed Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne.<\/p>\n
He remained as Tottenham boss until 1991 but is best remembered for being England’s manager for their run to the semi-finals of Euro ’96 on home turf.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Overcoming pre-tournament scandal when\u00a0Paul Gascoigne and others were photographed drunk in a Hong Kong nightclub, the Three Lions achieved unforgettable wins over Scotland and Holland.<\/p>\n
Eliminating Spain on penalties in the quarter-finals, they suffered an agonising shoot-out loss to Germany in the last four, with current England boss Gareth Southgate missing the decisive kick.<\/p>\n
Venables would later coach Australia, Palace a second time, Middlesbrough alongside Bryan Robson and Leeds, before returning to the England set-up as part of Steve McClaren’s staff.<\/p>\n
