{"id":300556,"date":"2023-11-26T13:24:11","date_gmt":"2023-11-26T13:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/?p=300556"},"modified":"2023-11-26T13:24:11","modified_gmt":"2023-11-26T13:24:11","slug":"tottenham-to-pay-tribute-to-terry-venables-ahead-of-game-against-villa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportstons.com\/soccer\/tottenham-to-pay-tribute-to-terry-venables-ahead-of-game-against-villa\/","title":{"rendered":"Tottenham to pay tribute to Terry Venables ahead of game against Villa"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Terry Venables dies aged 80: Tottenham to pay tribute to their former player and manager with minute&#8217;s applause ahead of their game against Aston Villa<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Tottenham will pay tribute to Terry Venables after his death at the age of 80<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Venables won the FA Cup with Spurs as both a player and a manager\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tottenham\u00a0will pay tribute to their former manager and player Terry Venables before their home game with Aston Villa after his death at the age of 80.<\/p>\n<p>It was announced on Sunday that Venables, who also managed England, Barcelona\u00a0and Crystal Palace, had died following a long illness.<\/p>\n<p>Spurs players will wear black armbands ahead of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and there will also be a minute&#8217;s applause from supporters.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Sunday, Tottenham said: &#8216;The Club is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player and manager Terry Venables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Our deepest condolences are with Terry&#8217;s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/26\/11\/78245741-12792435-image-a-73_1700997493398.jpg\" height=\"509\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Terry Venables won the FA Cup in 1991 after Tottenham beat Nottingham Forest in the final<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/26\/11\/78245963-12792435-image-a-88_1700998281226.jpg\" height=\"430\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Venables signed both Paul Gascoigne (L) and Gary Lineker (R) during his time as Spurs boss<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/26\/11\/78246071-12792435-image-a-91_1700998865263.jpg\" height=\"529\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Venables also won the FA Cup as player at Tottenham, representing the club between 1987 and 1991<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In tribute, we shall hold a minute&#8217;s applause prior to kick-off and our players will wear black armbands during this afternoon&#8217;s fixture against Aston Villa.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Rest in peace, Terry.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Venables&#8217; family said: &#8216;We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who were were so lucky to have had in our lives.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aston Villa also posted a tribute on X, formerly known as Twitter. The club said: &#8216;Everyone at Aston Villa is deeply saddened by the passing of former England manager Terry Venables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Ahead of kick-off against Terry\u2019s former club Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon, a minute\u2019s applause will take place in his memory. The thoughts and condolences of all at the club are with his family and friends at this time.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Venables, who played over 100 games for the club, returned to White Hart Lane as manager.<\/p>\n<p>After starting his playing career at Chelsea, Venables signed for Tottenham in 1965.<\/p>\n<p>He played 142 games for Tottenham and scored nine goals, winning the\u00a0FA Cup in 1967 as beat his former club Chelsea in the final.
