Trent Alexander-Arnold helped Liverpool to a vital 1-1 away draw away at Premier League champions Manchester City.

Most supporters were expecting an end-to-end, lightning fast match, but aside from a chaotic opening 10 minutes, the contest became a chess match between two masters in Merseyside boss Jurgen Klopp and the Citizens' Pep Guardiola. Erling Haaland struck the first blow when he squeezed an effort through Alisson to open the scoring for City and to notch home his record 50th Premier League goal in 48 matches.

However, a patient Liverpool found their equaliser through a crisp strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the second-half. After both sides departed the Etihad Stadium with a draw, Daily Star Sport considers three things Klopp got right against his fierce rivals.

Klopp's master subs

Liverpool's boldness was perfectly encapsulated in their choice of midfield. Klopp opted for a midfield trio of Alexis Mac Allister sitting in front of the back four, while Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai marauded forward to support the attack.

All three players are at their best in the transitional phases of play, where they need to win the ball back and move the ball onto the forward players as fast as possible. However, while they did look threatening when City gave the ball back, Guardiola's side managed to play through the press on multiple occasions.

It all changed when Gravenberch was introduced in the second half. He helped Liverpool get a grip on the midfield and pushed City back. Once again, Klopp demonstrated how he can change a game with his substitutes.

After an international break spent playing in midfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold was deployed in his usual right-back position. While he has been on the right-side of the back four, Alexander-Arnold has been playing more as a hybrid-midfielder, which sees him step into the middle of the pitch when Liverpool have the ball.

However, entrusted with keeping an eye on the dangerous Jeremy Doku, Alexander-Arnold was repeatedly pinned back by the tricky Belgian. In the second-half, the England international was more forward thinking, repeatedly moving into the middle of the pitch or looking to overlap Salah.

This then led to Doku dropping deeper and deeper, to help protect an increasingly vulnerable Ake. Fittingly, Doku was nowhere to be seen when Alexander-Arnold took control of the ball from 25-yards out and found the bottom corner with a fearsome effort.

A new composure

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea paid City no respect. They went man for man, committed runners in behind the City defence and did everything they could to physically manhandle the Citizens.

Yes, Chelsea conceded four goals, but they also scored the same number and, in the end, arguably deserved the match. Strangely, Liverpool's performance against the Citizens felt rather tidy. The sometime frenetic 'Heavy Metal Football' was swapped for speedy precision and considered aggression.

There was no panic or frustration in this Liverpool side. In the end, they got their reward with Alexander-Arnold's goal.

Nervous frontline

Klopp opted for the directness and speed of Salah, Nunez and Jota to face City's back four. However, there seemed to be a huge lack of composure and sharpness in the front three.

This was evident in the first chance where Nunez was played in behind the back four in the first half. Instead of setting the ball out of his feet and then firing at goal, he took a touch, then another touch and then another touch before he lost the ball and the chance. City hurry and harry you in every area of the pitch.

Nunez is certainly improving but his nerves, particularly in front of goal, are palpable. Klopp overhauled his front line by introducing Luis Diaz for Jota and then dropping Cody Gakpo in behind Nunez to make a front four.
