Christopher Nkunku has had a direct hand in 141 goals thus far in his senior career – but he's also played a big role in one of football's greatest clangers.

'Greatest' in the sense that it won't soon be forgotten given there's nothing 'great' about the gaffe in the traditional sense. But in defence of Chelsea's £52million signing, Nkunku – who could make his long-awaited Blues debut against Newcastle on Saturday – did everything right in the build-up to the calamity in question.

Instead, all the honour – if one can call it that – belongs to former Stoke City forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Cameroon international was in his first season at Paris Saint-Germain and helping the club cruise to the Ligue 1 title when he perhaps got too comfortable for his own good.

The French giants were drawing 1-1 against Strasbourg in April 2019 and would have sealed the league crown with plenty of time to spare with three points at home. Nkunku, 26, thought he had set them on the path to do just that when he chipped goalkeeper Matz Sels in the 28th minute.

No defender had a chance of clearing the goal-bound effort, which would have put PSG in front for a second time and within reach of the trophy. That was until Choupo-Moting sought to snatch some glory himself – only for his deft touch to tip the ball onto the post and back in the direction of his own net.

Is Choupo-Moting's miss the worst of all time? Let us know in the comments section below.

Strasbourg scrambled back to clear their lines as Choupo-Moting was left scratching he head – and he wasn't alone. Commentator Jonathan Pearce asked in the moment whether it could be considered 'the worst miss of all time', and it's difficult to disagree.

"He couldn't do it in a cold night at stoke so I'm not surprised," joked one commenter. "It's a difficult finish for a player of his quality."

Others even went so far as to suggest the intervention was proof of match-fixing as PSG went on to draw 2-2 thanks to Thilo Kehrer's late equaliser. The club went on to secure the Ligue 1 title nonetheless, finishing 16 points clear of Lille in second place.

It's ironic that Nkunku was shipped off to RB Leipzig later the same year, while Choupo-Moting saw out a second season at PSG before joining him in Germany with Bayern Munich a year later. Almost five years on and Nkunku is looking to make more positive history in west London, where he could earn his bow after an ill-fated knee injury has stunted his Chelsea career.
