Rodrygo’s dad, Eric Goes, has hit out at Lionel Messi on social media after the 2023 Ballon d’Or winner clashed with his son during Argentina’s heated 1-0 win against Brazil on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
FIFA are set to open an investigation into the mayhem that surrounded Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier, with kick-off being delayed by 27 minutes as Argentina and Brazil fans inside the Maracana clashed in the terraces.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Amid the delayed start, Messi opted to take his team back to the dressing rooms, before they re-emerged onto the pitch, with Rodrygo confronting the Inter Miami forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mail Sport understands that the pair had exchanged some heated words, with Rodrygo blasting Messi’s team, calling Argentina ‘cowards’.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But the Real Madrid forward’s father has come to the defence of his son, posting a picture of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner seeming to shout at the 22-year-old as well as a picture of Messi grabbing Manuel Ugarte by the neck during Argentina’s 2-0 defeat by Uruguay.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rodrygo’s dad has hit out at Lionel Messi on Instagram after he clashed with his son during Brazil’s 1-0 defeat by Argentina, writing:\u00a0‘The saint who doesn’t get into trouble with anyone…’<\/p>\n

Rodrygo subsequently revealed that he had received racist abuse online after the match<\/p>\n

‘The saint who doesn’t get into trouble with anyone…’ he captioned the post, directing his comments towards Messi.<\/p>\n
Messi had also reportedly hit back at Rodrygo after the Real Madrid star called him a coward.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘We are the World Champions, how are we cowards?’ Messi\u00a0 responded. ‘Watch your mouth, kid.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
But Rodrygo wasn’t letting it go: ‘Now let’s look at the game, you’ll see us there.’\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘Let’s see, come on, come on,’ responded Messi.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nicolas Otamendi scored the only goal of the match, heading in Giovani Lo Celso’s cross from a corner in the 63rd minute to seal the victory for Argentina, with Brazil having now lost their last three World Cup qualifying matches.\u00a0<\/p>\n
After the game, Rodrygo also revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had been racially abused, before blasting the behaviour as ‘criminal’.<\/p>\n
‘Racists are always on duty. My social networks were invaded with insults and all kinds of nonsense. It’s there for everyone to see!’ he wrote.<\/p>\n

The police then intervened by charging at the supporters before hitting them with batons\u00a0<\/p>\n

Angel Di Maria has also been embroiled in controversy since the match, with footage from inside the tunnel seeming to show the Benfica star spitting at Brazil fans after they threw beer at him.\u00a0<\/p>\n
