Oscar Piastri rocked up to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix wearing an Australian cricket top gifted to him by Brett Lee in an ode to the men’s team after their World Cup triumph.

Piastri watched from afar as Pat Cummins’s side stormed to a six-wicket victory over tournament hosts and overwhelming favourites India on Sunday, becoming world champions for a record sixth time.

The McLaren star is a big cricket fan and took on teammate Lando Norris in the ‘F1 Ashes’ earlier this year, winning comfortably, and has now paid tribute to his countrymen ahead of the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.

‘Bowled up to the paddock like this today,’ he tweeted alongside a photo of himself in the famous green and gold.

‘[Thank you] Brett Lee for your 2003 WC shirt’.

Lee responded on Instagram: ‘Absolute legend mate! It suits you. Go the Aussies’.

Piastri and Lee are good friends, with the former pace bowler attending several races to support the young Australian.

Earlier this week, Piastri challenged India tragic and former F1 driver Karun Chandhok to wear an Australia shirt as punishment for his side’s defeat in Ahmedabad.

‘Want you entering the Abu Dhabi paddock in an Aussie cricket top please @karunchandhok,’ he tweeted. ‘Only fair’.

Unfortunately for Piastri, Chandhok is not on punditry duty this weekend, with the Sky Sports expert completing his final race of 2023 in Las Vegas.
