Germany players have been slammed by a national newspaper for their performance during the defeat by Austria in a friendly on Tuesday.

The Euro 2024 hosts were beaten 2-0 thanks to goals from two players who ply their trade in Germany – Borussia Dortmund star Marcel Sabitzer and RB Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgartner.

Germany also had Leroy Sane sent off for pushing both hands into Phillipp Mwene’s face in a second-half altercation on another chastening night for Julian Nagelsmann’s men, which followed a 3-2 home loss to Turkey on Saturday.

And German newspaper Bild did not hold back in their ratings for the team as they issued a damning verdict on their display.

Bild uses numbers one to six to grade each player, with six being the worst.

Five players – Sane, Antonio Rudiger, Serge Gnabry, Nicklas Fullkrug and Julian Brandt – were all given scores of six following their respective performances.

Stars including Thomas Muller, former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels, as well as boss Nagelsmann, were awarded a five.

Kevin Trapp 2, Jonathan Tah 5, Antonio Rudiger 6, Mats Hummels 5, Kai Havertz 4, Leon Goretzka 5, Ilkay Gundogan 5, Serge Gnabry 6, Julian Brandt 6, Leroy Sane 6, Niclas Fullkrug 6, Thomas Muller 5, Benjamin Henrichs 4, Florian Wirtz 4, Joshua Kimmich 4, Robert Andrich.

Manager: Julian Nagelsmann 5

Only goalkeeper Kevin Trapp avoided the ire of the newspaper as the Stuttgart stopper was given a rating of two.

On Sane, who was dismissed in the 49th minute, Bild said the Bayern Munich winger’s red card was ‘inexplicable’ and ‘damaging to the entire team’.

Bild claimed Gnabry was ‘completely ineffective’, said Brandt’s performance showed why he shouldn’t be starting and questioned Rudiger’s inability to replicate his Real Madrid form when he plays for the national side.

Nagelsmann’s tactics ‘seemed to overwhelm’ some of his players, the newspaper added.

The Germany boss was critical of the display in Vienna. He told broadcaster ZDF: ‘We’re not playing freely. We’ve an unbelievable amount of work to do in each position.

‘We need to accept the situation but we can’t fall into the role of being victims.

‘We are a really well-functioning group at training, but it’s not transferring onto the pitch. We’re missing some self-confidence, which is not a surprise when you see the past few months.’

Borussia Dortmund star Marcel Sabitzer scored Austria’s first goal on a poor night for Germany

Gundogan added: ‘There is frustration and disappointment. At the end we made it really easy for the Austrians to create chances.

‘We have to be honest that it is not just the defence; defending starts up front.’

Germany qualified for next year’s Euros automatically as hosts and will be in pot one for the December 2 draw in Hamburg along with Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium and England.
