Fans of Manchester United’s women’s team have been left fuming after a goal was controversially ruled out.

United have been facing City in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in the Women’s Super League, with the home side taking the lead through Katie Zelem’s 21st minute penalty. United then thought they had a second when Geyse found the net, only for the goal to be disallowed, with the officials ruling that the ball had gone out of play in build-up.

United fans were first unhappy that the goal hadn’t been given, but also bemused as to why a corner wasn’t given as ball was heading out via a challenge from City defender Alanna Kennedy.

One mused: “If Geyse doesn't control the ball before it’s ‘out’ then surely it's a corner, not a goal kick? Perfectly good goal either way and no one was offside.”

Another said: “Geyse has a second United goal ruled out for the ball going of play, I really don’t think it looked fully over the line.” A third added: “It was too obvious to ignore, but no reason to disallow Geyse’s goal, and some of the offside calls are a bit questionable.”

A fourth added: “Feel for Geyse, she's been class & that seemed a certain goal to me.” A fifth pointed out: “Can someone explain why – if the ball was out for the Geyse goal – we didn’t get a corner? I don’t understand the rule applied there.”

Another fan raged: “That ball was never out. Robbed.” A seventh declared: “That ball by Geyse wasn't out of the line and I will die on that hill.”

It proved to be a key moment in the contest as City hit back to take a 3-1 lead. Jill Rooard and Lauren Hemp scored in quick succession before the break while Khadija Shaw added the third 10 minutes into the second half.
