Former Premier League winner Tim Sherwood believes there is ‘no chance’ Marcus Rashford should start for England at Euro 2024.

The Manchester United winger scored 30 goals for the Red Devils last season, but has failed to back that up so far this term, netting just once.

He started England’s underwhelming 2-0 win against Malta on Friday, but struggled to make an impact and was taken off in the second half after accidentally colliding with team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Sherwood is concerned by Rashford’s form and does not expect him to get back to his best this season while working under Erik ten Hag.

When asked if Rashford warrants a place in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up for next summer’s tournament, Sherwood said on Soccer Saturday: ‘No, not a chance. He can thank his manager for playing his way out of the England team, unfortunately.

‘I think if he was at Man City now, I think he’s got all the attributes to be a world-class player and make the England team.

‘I think there’s not going to be a turnaround between now and the end of the season, unfortunately, and I think he can thank Ten Hag for that because he’s not been good enough.’

While Rashford has endured a tough period at United, with the side losing nine of their 18 matches in 2023-24, Manchester City duo Jack Grealish and Phil Foden have been starring for the league leaders.

Sherwood believes both players should be two of the first names on Southgate’s teamsheet, claiming it would be ‘criminal’ to leave either man out.

‘For me, Jack Grealish has to be there,; Sherwood continued. ‘I worked with Jack, I know what he’s like, but for Phil Foden not to be in this starting line-up is criminal.

‘Both of these players have to be in the team. We have to build teams around players with ability like this.’

England return to action on Monday night for their final game of 2023 when they travel to North Macedonia.

Rashford and Foden started Friday’s match at Wembley, but Southgate could opt to recall Grealish and Bukayo Saka as the Three Lions look to end their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign on a high.
