Chelsea shot-stopper Robert Sanchez insists the Blues are hoping to exceed all expectations by making a miraculous return to the Champions Leagues spots this season. The west Londoners find themselves in 10th place in the Premier League table after another dismal start to a top-flight campaign but recent results suggest things are on the up.

Last week, Chelsea became the first team to topple high-flying Tottenham Hotspur in a gutsy 4-1 win away from home before Mauricio Pochettino’s men pulled off a stunning 4-4 draw with reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday in front of a packed-out Stamford Bridge.

Back-to-back stellar showings have instilled confidence in Chelsea’s dressing room with Sanchez insisting that he and his team-mates have their sites set on European football, even if it is a “big ask” at this stage.

“Of course, we only take it game-by-game but we want to do our best possible,” said Sanchez after the Man City match. “We hope to get in Europe or the Champions League again. I think it isn’t impossible, if we keep improving in every game and getting points in every game then I think it is possible.

“It is a big ask but we’ve got spirit confidence, belief and the quality we have that we can get there. I think the fans can see it. It is what we talk about in the dressing room that we are building that confidence and with that comes spirit as well. We are just fighting and we feel we can win any game.”

Pochettino’s desire to win was evident at the end of the game when the furious Argentine stormed onto the pitch to confront referee Anthony Taylor for blowing the final whistle while his side was still on the attack. He later apologised for the outburst but Sanchez says the rest of the team share the same passion.
