Rasmus Hojlund insists the Manchester United dressing room is still behind Erik ten Hag despite losing nine of their 17 games this season.

United’s 4-3 defeat to FC Copenhagen in Denmark on Wednesday night has left their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stage hanging by a thread.

Ten Hag’s side must win their next Group A game against Galatasaray in Istanbul, and probably beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford as well. Even then, it might not be enough if other results go against them.

There were mitigating factors for United’s defeat at Parken Stadium, mainly Marcus Rashford’s sending-off before half-time when his team were two goals ahead thanks to Hojlund’s double against his old club.

United’s £72million striker believes the players are still behind Ten Hag despite speculation over his future. ‘He’s a really good coach,’ said Hojlund. ‘He cares about every single detail, and he helps me a lot, gives me a lot of confidence and supports me.

‘I think every player in the dressing-room supports him. I hope it is just a matter of time (before United succeed). The first 30 minutes today was some of the best football we have been playing this season.’

Hojlund’s two goals took his tally to five for United since signing from Atalanta in the summer. Defeat took the shine off his achievement, but the Denmark striker said it was still a memorable night.

‘It was very special for me to hear the FC Copenhagen hymn before the match, of course, but I am playing for Manchester United,’ added Hojlund.

‘It was nice to score two goals but having said that it is a shame that we conceded a red card because we were playing very well in the first 20-25 minutes. We need a little luck at the moment, we miss the small things.

‘I will bring some confidence to the next games but it is all about winning and I cannot stand here with my arms above my head (celebrating) after we just lost a match. It is irritating and frustrating, but I cannot do so much about it. That’s how football is.’
